So in last week's note, I talked about how we should sell ourselves. After sending out that note, I decided to do something I'd not ordinarily do and the results are mind-blowing for me. What did you do after that mail? Yes, I am asking you.
Well, it may just be that you didn't know what to sell about you. Most times, you don't even have to sell your business or advertise it.
Branding is so much more than what people see. It's about how you make people feel. - Kimberly Hadyn
People don't buy from companies, they buy from who they like or they can relate to.
A brand is simply what people think about when they think of you. - RORY VAYDEN
Miss KoiKoi (feel free to laugh here) did not build her reputation in Day Schools, she has her target audience and story. She has a style. 1 pair of red heels, still searching for the second pair and haunting young kids.
Growing up, in a small town called Ajaokuta (well, not so small), the biggest estates have women who sell retail items in large quantities. We called them "MADAM EVERYTHING". So each estate had theirs and their peculiarities. Once you said, MADAM EVERYTHING and the estate name, the image of a person is formed. We had another woman called "MADAM BELGIUM" cause she sells wears from Belgium.
If you look carefully, in your environment you have an 'Iya to n ta bread' or a guy white pencil mouth Camry.
You associate people with what they have and what they do. Some of them built that reputation. For some others, they were given based on their characteristics and behaviours.
In Nigerian Universities, each department has a particular lecturer and course that is avoided, why because it is branded that way. Same way, you don't go to some people to help with your academics and you go to some others.
This is because an association with word/character and a person has been formed.
So, what do people associate you with? Food, money, books, comedy, a certain skill or ability, your height, colour or skin type?
Build your brand around it. Live your best life with it. Make money with it.
If you don't like what you are associated with, you have the power to change it.
Your brand begins with your story. Your Brand Story is your why. People will most of the time buy your why before even picking your product. They’ll always remember that story every time they buy.
You can either tell your story or tell that of another.
a drop of honey for your day...
